Italeri 1/500 Roman Colosseum Model Kit

The construction of the Flavio amphitheater, best known all over the World as Colosseum (Colosseo in Italian), began in AD 72 under the emperor Vespasian and ended just eight years later under emperor Titus. Built in travertine and tuff stones, it is the world’s largest amphitheater and it is considered the symbol of the majesty of Imperial Rome. The Colosseum was used to host the favorite shows of Roman society, such as the fights between animals, mainly imported from Africa and the Middle East, and the fighting between gladiators.

The Colosseum could accommodate up to 80,000 people who could quickly get out, at the end of the shows, thanks to a modern concept of seating, stairs, and tunnels. The “velarium”, operated by experienced military fleet sailors from Misenum, also provided an effective protection against sun or bad weather. Today the “Colosseo” is one of the most visited monuments in the World and it is one of the most famous symbols of Rome and Italy.

We were finally able to get our hands on the NEW Italeri 1/500 Roman Colosseum kit 68003. As with the previous architectural model kit release from Italeri, The Parthenon, this one is also an Easy Assembly kit. The model is molded in a light tan. It is over 14 inches wide and has all the details molded on. This is a local landmark for the folks at Italeri. They obviously did homework their homework which is quite notable on the surface detail.

One can almost build this model kit without cement but better safe than sorry as the saying goes. Included with the kit [and following The Parthenon kit tredn] Italeri provides a very nicely printed mini-magazine with the instructions as well as historical facts of the Roman Colosseum. For the record once again, this is not the Colosseum as it stands today, but as it was in its glorious day after 82 A.C.

There are figures of gladiators and some wild animals provided with this model kit. Unfortunately yet understandable they are not in scale with the model. The figures are more or less around 1/100 scale.

A well-printed sheet is included and this will help depict the all the statues adorning the structure all around. This seems to me like at a glance like a 3 hours build not counting painting it.

Yes Amazon customers, this is a model kit that you have to assemble and paint. So spare us from the negative reviews because you failed to read the items description.
