Bandai 1/144 RTX-65 Guntank Early Type

A large fighting vehicle officially adopted by the Earth Federation Forces in U.C. 0065. Equipped with two large-caliber cannons for bombardment, it also has quadruple autocannons in its manipulators, which are capable of both anti-ground and anti-air combat. This machine was born from concepts far beyond those of traditional tanks.

Thanks to this breakthrough in large tank design, it has established an overwhelming presence ever since its deployment in the colonies began. It is used to maintain public order. [Source and more info here-».]

To close this week of side projects, I will share a classic. This is the 1/144 scale RTX-65 Guntank Early Type from Bandai models. One of the beauties from building Gunpla model kits is that one can go with the on-screen version or simply let your imagination fly. For this one, I did the later. Although the colors are pretty much what the instructions call, I did use an assortment of colors from Mission Models US on a base of Light Ghost Grey MMP-074 and Dark Ghost Grey MMP-075.

I have yet to get used to weathering with acrylics and as many of you know by now, the styrene plastic used by Bandai is not very friendly to enamel washes. For that reason and to do my own test, I used Testors Wet Look Gloss in a spray can. On top of that, I added my decals. These are leftovers from an Abrams M1-A1 tank I build a while ago along with stencils from 1/48 aircraft model kits.

After all the decals were added, I sprayed the model with a heavy coat of Wet Look clear again to protect the plastic from the enamel products from Ammo by Mig. I used Starship Wash A.MIG 1009. The rest was thru Streak Grime, Rust and Brown washes on selective areas,

As long as the wash doesn’t accumulate in connecting areas and ball joints, the chances of ruining the plastic are almost none.

Having done it with a ‘live’ project, I wouldn’t hesitate to do it again on another model from Bandai. The overall fit of the kit is very good although I found the top hull (part A-16) sliding onto place as it should. I had to widen the groves in order to make the art go all the way thru. Other than that, this build is a pleasure and I highly recommend it!
