Revell Starsky & Hutch Torino

Released for four seasons in the seventies, the Starsky and Hutch series took the cop drama genre and ran with it. The show featured drug use, shoot outs, and lots and lots of car chases featuring the signature bright red “striped tomato” Ford Torino owned by Starsky. Any criminal would know from a mile away who was driving up in the bright red Torino, but a 351 c.i. engine with dual carbs let the partners catch up. Kit features police radio, dome light, detailed chassis and engine, plus slotted mag wheels.

Presenting the long awaited Revell  1/24 Ford Torino from the Starsky & Hutch hit TV show.  In case you missed the memo, this is an all NEW TOOLING and the detail is exquisite.  It is my habit of test fitting the chassis to the body shell before painting the body. That way I have an idea of how hard or easy this task will be before over handling the painted body shell. I have to confess that the chassis and body on the new Revell Starsky & Hutch Ford Torino fits like a glove.

Warning!
Instructions Mistake Spotted:
Page 9, step 9 parts 65 and 65 are inverted meaning that part 65 actually goes on the left side of the body and part 66 goes on the right drivers side of the car.

The interior of the car is nicely detailed with a wood grained decal for the dash bezels area and separate decals for all the gauges. A CB-Radio is provided.

You couldn’t have a Starsky & Hutch car without the emergency strobe light. Revell also provided this light fixture already molded in red.

Alert!
You can read great info on the Starsky Torino here.

The kit comes molded in black and the body shell along with some other parts are molded in red.  Finding the right shade of red for this model kit was a bit of a challenge.  It is between a red and orange looking at reference pictures around the web.  With a pending overseas trip, I had little time for ordering a custom color so I opted for off-the-shelf Krylon Short Cuts Red SCS-033 from the craft store.

The entire model went together without issues to write home about. Being a new tooling kit, there is absolutely no flash or mold lines either.  There is one problem though: These Mag wheels are obviously a nice welcome and a sought after set;  so I wish Revell could have them available separate for sale. HOWEVER, the metal axle that is supposed to give the wheels and tires rotation does not work as it should. I understand the concept, however it just work on paper and not on the kit. As a result, I had to super glue the wheels to the car axles to keep them from wobbling. No big deal *for me* but I can’t speak for other model kit builders out there.

Before I end this entry, the engine is nicely detailed with plenty of room to super detail it.  The distributor is begging for spark plug wires and the brake fluid reservoir is simply asking for some hydraulic lines made out of tin or copper.

I enjoyed very much building the Ford Torino from Starsky & Hutch. It was one of my favorite shows from back in the day. As a model builder I can highly recommend this kit.
You won’t be disappointed!

This kit brings back fond memories of my youth and JoHan’s 1972 Gran Torino Sport kit, which now is a rare item, and when you find one it is out of the reach money wise for the average joe like myself. So thumbs up to Revell for the releasing of this kit!
